And from my experience with Promise of Blood, the first book of the trilogy, I can safely say that I totally agree with him Promise of Blood begins where I’d expect a sequel to begin, with the tail end of a (mostly) successful coup. Not only that, but he really gets into the body and soul of each character, acting out the dialogue instead of just reading the words. Brandon Sanderson once blurbed the Powder Mage trilogy, calling it just plain awesome. Each character had their own unique voice inflection so you could easily pick out who was talking. His narration was superb, even if I had to increase the speed with which I listened as he does read at a slow pace.

Overall, this was a fantastic debut by McLellan and I hate that I waited so long to give it a read. I really enjoyed the magic system that was inserted here, with the 'powder mages' ability to basically sniff black powder to gain heightened capabilities, the ability to direct bullets once shot, and the ability to blow up other mages' powder charges. Each one had their own influences, decisions to be made, and lives to protect and McClellan did a wonderful job bringing them all together. The characters are some of the most fleshed out I have seen and there wasn't one that stood out more than another. Given that the synopsis of Brian McLellan’s Promise of Blood promises a book overflowing with political intrigue and action, it’s surprising how little of it actually ends up on the page. When he kills every single member of the Royal Cabal, they all utter the same mysterious phrase: 'You can't break Kresimir's Promise'. Field Marshal Tamas, commander of the Adran Army, has just committed a brutal coup against Adro's monarchy. And from my experience with Promise of Blood, the first book of the trilogy, I can safely say that I totally agree with him Promise of Blood begins where I’d expect a sequel to begin, with the tail end of a (mostly) successful coup. Promise of Blood is the first book in the Powder Mage Trilogy by Brian McClellan. There are uprisings, downfalls, investigations, wars, and LOTS of black powder. Review Brandon Sanderson once blurbed the Powder Mage trilogy, calling it just plain awesome. In a time of upheaval, resurgence and corrupted Royalty Privileged, one-man’s love for his lost wife and his country burns and fuels a new order where all can be treated equally. As far as the story itself, think of the Revolutionary War mixed with a unique magic system, gods, and cave lions. Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan (The Powder Mage Trilogy: Book 1) The alchemy of gunpowder fused with the magic of sorcery.
